- Review -
Reading Darcie Boleyn's Something Old, Something New was like eating sweet & sticky jam sandwiches, watching butterflies flutter about above sun-dappled meadow, or slipping into your favourite and cosiest pair of pyjamas. I noticed and took to Darcie's warm and inviting style as soon as this book began and knew that I was in for a treat long before it had properly taken flight. The humour, the uplifting and smile-inducing narrative and the family feel that completely enveloped this story are some of my favourite things when it comes to choosing a book to read. Something Old, Something New ticked all of those boxes.

In this book, the author introduces us to Annie Thomas. Annie is an English teacher and has been for fifteen years. She works hard in order to pay the bills and to keep a roof over her family's head, and very rarely takes the time out for herself. Darcie Boleyn begins Annie's story with box of jumping firecrackers, and we're told of the two words she's not only hearing for the first time, but the second. 'Decree absolute'. The author builds up Annie's history wonderfully and it didn't take long for me at all to warm to her character. As a single, working mum, it quickly became clear how often (all the time) she put other people's needs before her own. She'd somehow managed to become a woman who felt that she was only around for the benefit of others. Still, having said that, Annie absolutely and utterly adores her family. Her children added such character and humour to this story, I absolutely loved any appearance they made in the plot. Janis, Anabelle and Henry were like the secondary stars of this show, but as readers come to find much later, one of them very swiftly moves into the limelight and Annie just can't believe it.

Annie's personal history when it came to love and marriage was beautifully told by Darcie Boleyn. Every emotion Annie had felt was touched upon tenderly and I felt incredibly sympathetic towards her character. Not because she'd "failed", as she often thought she had in the book, but because the thought had really managed to bury its way inside of Annie's head. So many things had happened prior to when Annie's story begins and I adored learning about them and slowly putting the pieces of her life together as the author provided me with the necessary info. Her first husband, Evan, and second husband, Dex, had both had children and with Annie and loved her too, but things hadn't worked out in the way they'd all hoped. I loved that Annie, despite having been through her hardships, still seemed to have a little spark of fight in her. Even though the experience had hurt her, she knew that she still had to get up and go to work and make sure the children were okay, and this is something that I feel a lot of readers will understand and be able to agree with too.

As Annie's story progresses at a steady pace, she's faced with the return of Evan. She'd loved him so fiercely at one point and it was clear that he still had a physical as well as an emotional effect on her, no matter how hard she tried to ignore it. I couldn't wait for this reunion to take place. With the invitation to husband no.2's wedding simmering away in the kitchen, I knew it would be a huge thing for Annie to deal with, but that's not all Annie faces within Something Old, Something New. Real-life plays a massive part in this story, placing hurdles in Annie's way that she has absolutely no control over. When the plot thickened and I, alongside Annie, realised what we were faced with, I couldn't believe it, but I knew that she and Evan had no choice but to pull together and deal with it like two adults. I was compelled by the turn of events and couldn't wait to see how it would all play out.

The romance aspect of this book was spot-on for me. Two old flames reunited only to create a furnace of emotions, and memories surging to the surface and sparking all over the place. It was completely heart-warming and put a smile onto my face numerous times throughout reading. Darcie Boleyn captured these tender moments beautifully with her gorgeous descriptions and fabulous dialogue and it was just such a pleasure to read.

All in all, Something Old, Something New by Darcie Boleyn was a gorgeously-written, beautifully endearing tale of family, second chance love, and stepping up to life's hurdles with a fierce determination in order to stay standing. It was uplifting, romantic and hilariously funny, and this has ensured I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for the next novel from this wonderful author. Becca's Books is awarding Something Old, Something New by Darcie Boleyn with four of my bookish stars! Special thanks to Darcie Boleyn, Jenny from Neverland Blog Tours and Carina, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

- About the Author -
Darcie Boleyn has a huge heart and is a real softy. She never fails to cry at books and movies, whether the ending is happy or not. Darcie is in possession of an overactive imagination that often keeps her awake at night. Her childhood dream was to become a Jedi but she hasn’t yet found suitable transport to take her to a galaxy far, far away. She also has reservations about how she’d look in a gold bikini, as she rather enjoys red wine, cheese and loves anything with ginger or cherries in it – especially chocolate. Darcie fell in love in New York, got married in the snow, rescues uncoordinated greyhounds and can usually be found reading or typing away on her laptop.
