'My husband did not mean to kill Annie Doyle, but the lying tramp deserved it.'

Lydia Fitzsimons lives in the perfect house with her adoring husband and beloved son. There is just one thing Lydia yearns for to make her perfect life complete, though the last thing she expects is that pursuing it will lead to murder. However, needs must - because nothing can stop this mother from getting what she wants...

Blimey, this was compulsive reading. Lying in Wait is the first novel I have read by Liz Nugent and it certainly won't be the last. I cannot begin to describe the sheer amount of emotions I felt throughout my reading of this book. I went from one extreme to the next, chapter by chapter, and found that I just couldn't get enough of the story unravelling before me. Nugent is a sensational writer, that much is true, and Lying in Wait actually made it into my top books of 2016. From the first page to the last, I was obsessed with this story.

In Liz Nugent's Lying in Wait, readers are introduced to Lydia, along with her husband, Andrew, and son, Laurence. At first glance, Lydia and her family are completely perfect in every way imaginable. They live in a beautiful home, with a beautiful garden, and are living a beautiful life together, the three of them blissfully happy. But also blissfully unaware of what is just around the corner, ready to come crashing through the sparkling fa├žade. Lydia is desperate for a baby, and it quickly becomes clear that there are no limits as to how far she will go in order to get what she wants, even including her husband in her plans who will apparently do anything in order to make his wife happy. I couldn't help feeling that Lydia took Andrew's love and adoration for granted, and abused it in the most shocking of ways. Despite not agreeing right away, Andrew does indeed take part in the plans Lydia has, which leads to catastrophic consequences that ricochet through the years.

Nugent takes her readers back and forth in time, focusing on different characters throughout, making it all the more thrilling and interesting. Readers truly get a glimpse of what is going on from all viewpoints and, later on, when characters begin to collide, the pace is turned up a notch (or two or three) and I just couldn't believe how circumstances were beginning to turn out for all of those involved. The characters within Nugent's Lying in Wait were complex, each with their own motives backing their actions. There was so much mystery wrapped around the author's words as she told this tale, and when certain truths began to come to light, I waited with baited breath to watch how the reveal would affect them all. It was tragically sad at times, but always gripping and capable of consuming you whole, as it did to me.

Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent was a novel about greed and obsessive love, about searching out the truth no matter how many times you're knocked back, and about being honest, no matter how much it hurts those who you love. I was lost to this novel completely and really can't recommend it enough. With such a gripping, dark and horrifying premise, and characters who you're desperate to figure out and understand, I've no doubt that this book will be sitting on the shelves of many a reader for years and years and years. I'll be keeping a keen eye out for any book news to come from Liz Nugent, as this was superb.

Becca's Books is awarding Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent with five of my bookish cupcakes. A truly captivating novel, written by an author who knows exactly how to capture her reader's attention.
