Blog Tour: Book Review - Sleep Tight by Caroline Mitchell

Close your eyes... Just pray you don't wake up.

A killer stalks the streets of East London. All over the area, murdered young women are discovered, their bodies posed into a sickening recreation of fairytale princesses.

Detective Ruby Preston is determined to hunt down a disturbed individual who is using the women to realise his dark fantasies. But when body parts are found at the home of her former lover, Nathan Crosby, Ruby is torn between her job and her heart.

Convinced that he is being framed, Ruby must catch the killer before Nathan becomes the number one suspect. But as more victims are found, it becomes harder to prove his innocence.

As Ruby starts to close in on the twisted individual, can she stop him before he strikes again? And how well does she really know the man she loves?

I may being going way overboard here (no, I'm not. I'm definitely not), but has Caroline Mitchell actually written my ULTIMATE DREAM-COME-TRUE OF A BOOK? I think she has, guys. Actually no, I know she has. In the brand-new irresistibly dangerous and compulsive crime thriller that is Sleep Tight, Mitchell has combined bloody fairy-tale and picture-perfect murder in the most shocking and unbelievable of ways. This is the most addictive and dark yet enchanting novel I've held within my hands in a long time, and once I'd started, I could not bear to put it down.

In Caroline Mitchell's Sleep Tight, readers are reunited with the unavoidable force of woman that is the one and only Detective Ruby Preston. First introduced to her readers in Love You to Death, I was SO thrilled to be back at Ruby's side. As ridiculous as it sounds, when you're with Ruby Preston, even in fictional circumstances, you feel safe. You just know that Ruby will have your back, no matter what. She is a rule-breaker. She is a bad-ass. She is out-spoken and follows her instinct which, in hindsight, always gives her results. She is the type of woman who lets no one stand in her way, and knows what it takes to crack a case, even if that means stepping out and going it alone, even if doing so means that she is putting herself at risk. But be under no illusion that Ruby is hard as nails because, just like the rest of us, she has her weak points. Ruby Preston, ladies and gentleman, is a woman not to be messed with, and her character absolutely SHINES THROUGH in Sleep Tight. Her intelligence is one that helps her tremendously within the cases she comes up against, but of course, every detective has their day... Will this killer, who seems to have a fascination with fairy-tales, and enjoys decorating and dressing up his victims in just that way, be the one to make Ruby stumble? Only time will tell.

The hustle and bustle of a police station is something that I am beginning to love when it comes to my reading tastes just recently, and Sleep Tight had plenty of that. When the first victim is found, Ruby finds herself thrown into a mystifying and beguiling case that she is sure she has got a handle of... until things begin to take a turn for the worse and everything that she thought she knew is slipping through her fingers faster than sand. What I love about Mitchell's books is how fast, razor-sharp and neat they are. Even though there is description, even though there is plenty of dialogue, it all just seems to slot seamlessly into place. There are no lulls in this story, no moments where I wonder when the next 'big thing' is going to take place. There is always something waiting around the corner for Mitchell's readers. Always something waiting in hiding, ready to jump right out when you least expect it and bite you. It's exciting, it's pacy, it's absolutely rammed with enough moments to keep you insanely hooked, and the characters are so well thought-out and believable, you feel as if you're right there in the station with them, watching as the case begins to unravel.

As the number of victims begins to rise, Ruby begins to realise that this isn't just any serial killer they're hunting down. This is a man who is putting plenty of effort and spending plenty of time in ensuring that his girls are laid out perfectly, ready to be found. Obsessed with art and perfection, the killer is a person desperate to be celebrated and acknowledged by the world. Mitchell delivers the killer's history in the most intriguing of ways. As always, I was eager to figure out the killer's motives and what had them to the way they lived today, where it had stemmed from in their past. I was waiting for the pieces of this puzzle to fit into place, yet racing along beside Ruby as she tried to pick up the breadcrumbs of clues the killer had so foolishly left behind. I was entranced, as was Ruby, each time a new victim was called in. I waited to see which character from the fairy-tale they would be. But these killings weren't based on the rose-tinted fairy-tales that were blessed with happy-ever-afters. These versions are grim and dark and mostly ending in death, adding a whole sense of evilness and eeriness to the world in which Ruby inhabits.

As I began to near the end of Sleep Tight, I roared through the final chapters with an urgency I haven't felt before. I was desperate to see whether Ruby would make it in time. Desperate to see if there'd be another victim and, if so, who? This novel also focuses on the other aspects of Ruby's life too. There's Nathan Crosby to take into consideration... *takes Nathan into consideration, swoons, sighs* There are also the other members of Ruby's team to take into consideration too. Who knows what secrets are lurking there? Before Ruby realises it, her most loved people in the world are in danger alongside the women that the killer is going after. It is a race against time. A furious one at that. And a bloody addictive one, too.

Suffice to say, if I had tried to read this novel any quicker than what I had, I'm afraid my Kindle most probably would have gone up in flames right there in my very hands. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that I can fault about Sleep Tight. For me, it had it all. How Mitchell managed to combine the beauty of a fairy-tale with the ugly evilness of this killer has knocked me for six. This will slash your ideals of those happy-ever-afters. It will stain and taint any hopes of sweet dreams. It will play with your mind for days and refuse to let go of you even once you have finished.

This is getting only the highest rating from me. I am still reeling from the discoveries made by Ruby Preston within Sleep Tight. Say goodbye to those much-adored fairy-tales and welcome in the darkness that will stain them in the most grotesque of ways, courtesy of Caroline Mitchell.
